Import Pet Treats from China to the U.S.: Buyer Checklist
A source-linked checklist for U.S. importers of pet treats made in Shandong, China: FDA facility registration, Prior Notice, FSVP, APHIS, labeling and China export inspection.
Check requirements before shipment
- FDA food facility registration
Confirm that the producing food facility has the required FDA registration. Taichong Pet Food is an FDA-registered facility. Registration alone does not clear a product or shipment.
- FDA Prior Notice
Arrange FDA Prior Notice for each imported food shipment before arrival, unless a regulatory exemption applies. Pet treats are animal food.
- Importer FSVP
Identify the U.S. importer responsible for the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) and its applicable supplier-verification obligations.
- USDA APHIS review
Check the ingredients and origin with USDA APHIS. Some animal-derived products may need an APHIS permit or other documentation; requirements vary by material and country.
- Label review
Review the proposed label against FDA rules and the laws of every U.S. state where the treats will be sold. AAFCO model rules are used by states, but state requirements can differ.
- China export inspection and quarantine
Confirm the applicable China export inspection and quarantine steps and documents with the producing factory and export agent before shipment.
Please confirm the latest requirements with your customs broker. This checklist is a starting point, not a guarantee of entry. Product ingredients, origin, destination state and current rules can change the result.
